Brookfield Sprain & Strain Chiropractor

Many patients who choose Ascent Chiropractic as their Brookfield chiropractor do so for the treatment of sprains or strains. Sprains and strains can be a result of a sports injury, slip and fall, auto accident or simply an injury caused by overuse of the soft tissues, such as shoveling snow.

While these injuries can happen at virtually any joint in the body, at Ascent Chiropractic we most commonly treat patients for whiplash in the neck, sprained ankles, sprained shoulders, sprained knees and sprained wrists.

The Difference Between A Sprain & A Strain

Before treating an injury of this kind, it’s important to first understand the difference between the terms “strain” and “sprain”. A strain is an injury to the muscles and/or tendons, soft tissue structures which contract to produce movement.

Aside from the obvious sudden traumatic injuries, muscles can become strained from chronic overuse in athletics, repetitive physical activities at work, or from extended fine motor activity such as using a computer. Because muscles and tendons are constantly being supplied with blood, strains usually result in a rapid increase in the amount of blood and fluid to the injured area, causing swelling.

Conversely, a sprain is an injury to ligaments, structures which connect one bone to another and provide structural support to joints. There is no direct blood supply to ligaments, so when injury to a ligament occurs swelling, bruising and reduced flexibility may not appear for days and in some cases even weeks.

For example, victims of car accidents who’ve experienced whiplash often feel fine immediately following the incident but wake up days later unable to move their neck or back and in need of chiropractic care.

The symptoms of this kind of injury take longer to appear and unfortunately so does the healing process. Though strained muscles often recover within 1-3 weeks, serious ligament sprains can take up to three months for complete healing.

How Effective Is Chiropractic Care?

Fortunately, chiropractic care has been shown to help! In a clinical study of patients with ankle sprains, researchers tested the effectiveness of chiropractic joint manipulation versus anti-inflammatory medication, the most commonly prescribed medical treatment for sprains. They concluded that chiropractic care was just as effective as the medication in improving pain, flexibility, and range of motion.
