In this morning's Health Watch, if you've said, oh my aching back at some point in your life you are not alone. A new Consumer Reports survey finds 80% of adults, that's 8 in 10, have experienced back pain. It took an average of 5 or 6 treatments to alleviate the problem. Our own Dr. Jennifer Ashton is here with some advice about this. Now this is not science, this is a survey. Correct. And what's the takeaway here? This is telling us what I see every day in my practice. This is the most prevalent, common incident, ailment in this country and it's also the most difficult to treat. So if it doesn't affect you now, chances are good it will affect you at some point. People in the survey said the thing that worked best for them was? Believe it or not, hands-on therapies. So they're staying away from things like medication, prescription drugs or surgery. They're pursuing things like acupuncture, chiropractic adjustment, massage, things like that which is interesting. Yeah. And I've gone through this a lot and run the whole roller coaster and had prescription drugs!!! We've done some exercises. I find yoga is very, very helpful. There are certain postures in yoga that are phenomenally helpful in terms of this stuff. That's right. The problem unfortunately is by the time people get to that point, they're in so much pain, they need the quick fix and a lot of times that's prescription narcotics which is actually probably the worst thing for you. The thing is though, it's very interesting because a lot of people want to get surgery. They say, I want to get over this. some of it actually does work and has been successful for folks, but if you can sort of wait it out, a lot of times it tends to go away. Correct. If you have a herniated disc and you have neurologic symptoms, surgery should be a last resort, but it can be effective. We now know that too much back surgery was done in the past, and again, prevention before it starts, that's the key. Posture. Good posture. All right. Dr. Ashton, as always, thanks so much. You

Chiropractic Named The Top Choice For Back Treatment

It’s no secret that back pain is one of the most prevalent and costly health conditions in the US and has also proven to be one of the most difficult to treat. The good news is that a new Consumer Reports survey ranks manual therapy, in particular chiropractic adjustments, as the top choice for effective relief of many types of back pain, especially lower back pain. Chiropractic care take stress off surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments to relieve back pain and restore normal functioning and range of motion. On the other hand, most mainstream medical treatments, especially prescription narcotics, are simply a band-aid on the problem.

The best course of action, of course, is to prevent the problem in the first place! At Ascent Chiropractic, we incorporate core strengthening exercises, stretches and good posture habits in conjunction with proactive, preventative chiropractic care to keep your spine functioning like it was meant to!
