After back and neck pain, headaches are one of the most common reasons that patients seek out chiropractic care. It’s no surprise, as 90% of Americans suffer from tension headaches at some point in their lives. Some are intermittant, some are frequent, some are only a minor inconvenience while some cause nausea or debilitating pain.
Unfortunately, many people believe that having headaches is “normal.” It’s common for patients we see at Ascent Chiropractic in Brookfield to not even bring their headaches up until we ask about them because they assume that everyone experiences them.
However, headaches are not normal. Headaches are symptoms, literally your body talking to you. They’re not a disease. A headache is a message produced by your body to let you know that it is being stressed. That message needs to be received and acted upon instead of covering it up with medication.
The vast majority of headaches are simply signs of a misalignment of the vertebrae in the neck affecting the function of the nervous system. By impinging on nerve roots, these misalignments, or subluxations, affect the way the nervous system transmits information, resulting in the headache symptoms so many are familiar with.
How Do I Know If It’s A Tension Headache?
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are characterized by increased muscle tension, most commonly triggered by misalignment (or subluxation) of vertebrae in the neck region of the spine, resulting in nerve pressure at the base of the skull.
The majority of people experience this extra tension in the muscles of the neck, upper back, and shoulders, causing pain to radiate to the head. The pain of tension headaches is generally a steady, constant ache with a feeling of tightness throughout the neck and head.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help?
While medications can provide temporary headache relief, they do nothing to correct the underlying cause of the headache pain. Headache treatment at Ascent Chiropractic offers an effective and drugless means of preventing, diminishing, and in many cases eliminating these headache symptoms.
