Why You’d Be Crazy to Not See Your Chiropractor After an Auto Accident
Brookfield Auto Accident Chiropractor
It’s not uncommon to experience back pain or neck pain following a car accident. In fact, the majority of motor vehicle accident victims tend to report at least some degree of pain and discomfort within the first few days after the accident. Auto accidents and the whiplash and spinal injuries that accompany them can be extremely serious, and research has shown that without proper care their devastating effects can last a lifetime.
Consistently rated one of Brookfield’s best auto accident chiropractors, here at Ascent Chiropractic we have substantial experience treating auto accident patients and understand the best ways to care for back pain and whiplash pain without the need for medication or surgery.
Neck pain and back pain usually result when the force of an auto accident throws the musculoskeletal system out of proper alignment and causes damage to muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues surrounding the spine. For example, a whiplash injury may occur when the force of a rear-impact accident abruptly “whips” the cervical spine backwards and forwards. Whiplash, also known as cervical acceleration-deceleration syndrome, can be described in four phases.
The Four Phases of Whiplash
- In the first phase, the seat impacts the torso, the head position increases vertically, and an abnormal S-Curve develops in the cervical spine.
- In phase two, the neck hyperextends and the head strikes the seat. This causes injury to the soft tissues in the front of the neck.
- Phase three occurs when the passenger moves forward, rebounding from the seat. This is followed by forward acceleration of the head.
- In the final phase, the seatbelt retains the torso but the head continues moving forward, forcing the cervical spine into hyperflexion. This injures muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues in the back of the neck. The fourth phase is widely considered the most damaging stage.
Options For Treatment Following A Car Accident
While prescription painkillers, NSAIDs and muscle relaxers can mask the pain, they are not a long-term treatment solution. Additionally, medication alone cannot help patients regain mobility and proper function of their spine after an auto accident injury. But the good news is that chiropractic care can help.
Chiropractic adjustments treat the underlying spinal dysfunction by bringing the spine back into proper alignment while removing stress from the nerves, muscles and ligaments. Complementary therapies prescribed by your chiropractor, such as corrective strengthening exercises, are often used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments to bring full range of motion and stability back to the musculoskeletal system.
The Importance Of Prompt Chiropractic Treatment
If you have recently been in a car accident it’s important to contact us as soon as possible. Both acute and chronic injuries benefit from prompt treatment. With proper diagnostic care, your chiropractor will be able to identify your underlying injuries and create a custom treatment program to support your body’s natural healing process.
Remember that you do not need to be in a major accident to sustain serious damage to the musculoskeletal system. Accidents at speeds as slow as 5mph can still result in injury to the spine. Unfortunately, since a fender bender is often considered to be a “minor” accident, it’s not uncommon for accident victims delay seeking treatment, which can lead to months or even years of chronic pain. Prompt care makes a difference!
Are you suffering from a whiplash or spinal injury? Accident injury pain symptoms include back and neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain and dysfunction, fatigue, weakness or numbness in the upper or lower limbs, jaw pain, dizziness, blurred vision and facial pain. Chiropractic care is the safest and most effective way to correct the underlying cause of these auto injury symptoms and support the body’s natural healing process.
